The States of the Sinners on the Day of Resurrection: Punishments and Consequences

Sins and Their Punishments on the Day of Judgment

Hereafter Series Notes:

The States of The Sinners on The Day of Resurrection

We will go through some specific sins that are mentioned in the authentic sources, and their punishments on the Day of Resurrection:

(1) Those who did not pay Zakāh:

  • Their wealth will come to them in the form of a bald snake with two black spots on its eyes, which will bite them, saying “I’m your wealth.”
  • The Day of Resurrection is a completely different realm, and so we can’t imagine it.
  • The gold and silver that was not given in Zakāh will come as plates of fire and will burn the person.

Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ said,

“Whoever is made wealthy by Allāh and does not pay the Zakāt of his wealth, then on the Day of Resurrection his wealth will be made like a bald-headed poisonous male snake with two black spots over the eyes. The snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks and say, ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure.’”

Sahīh Al-Bukhārī (no. 1403).

2) The arrogant will be resurrected as ants in the form of a man:

The Prophet ﷺ said, “The arrogant will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection as tiny particles in the form of men. Disgrace will be cast over them from every direction.”

Sunan Ar-Tirmidhi‌ (no. 2492).

3) Sins for which Allāh will not speak to a person to: For a person to drag their trousers over their ankles out of pride (isbāl). A person that sold goods with a false oath. The Prophet ﷺ observed:

“There are three (types of) people to whom Allāh will neither speak on the Day of Resurrection nor look at them nor purify them, and they will have a painful chastisement.”

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ repeated it three times. Abū Dharr remarked: “They are ruined. Who are they, O Messenger of Allāh?” Upon this, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said,

“One who lets down his lower garments (below his ankles) out of arrogance, one who boasts of his favours done to another; and who sells his goods by taking a false oath.”

Sahīh Muslim (no. 106).

4) Sins for which Allāh will not look at a person for: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

“There are three at whom Allāh will not look on the Day of Resurrection: The one who disobeys his parents, the woman who imitates men in her outward appearance, and the Dayyūth (the one who has no protective jealousy over his womenfolk).“’

Sunan An-Nasā’ī (no. 2562).

6) The one that betrayed a Muslim (or the Muslims): The Prophet ﷺ said,

“For every one who breaks his covenant, there will be a (huge) flag on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said: ‘This flag proclaims a breach of covenant by so-and-so.’”

Sahīh Muslim (no. 1736)

7) Those who took land unjustly by force:
Will be sinking into the ground on the Day of Resurrection.

The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Whoever takes a piece of the land of others unjustly, he will sink down the seven earths on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sahīh Al-Bukhārī (no. 2454).

8) The one who is two-faced:
This is from the characteristics of the Hypocrites (Munāfiqīn)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“He who is two-faced in this world will have two tongues of fire on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sunan Abī Dāwūd (no. 4873). Classed as Sahīh by Shaykh Al-Albānī

9) The one who begs the people constantly, even though they have the means:
Such a person will come on the Day of Judgment with a face with no flesh.

The Prophet ﷺ said,

“If one of you would keep begging (of people) until he meets Allāh (on the Day of Resurrection) his face will be without a shred of flesh.”

Sahīh Muslim (no. 1040).

10) One who lies about his dreams: The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see, will be ordered to make a knot between two barley grains which he will not be able to do…”

Sahīh Al-Bukhārī (no. 7042).

  • This is referring to the one who lies to make it seem like he has good dreams. For praise from the people.
  • This is a difficult and stressful task – this will be on top of all the stress on the Day of Judgment.

11) The person that eavesdrops:
This is referring to the one that eavesdrops on conversations not meant for them

The Prophet ﷺ said,

“…And if somebody listens to the talk of some people who do not like him (to listen) or they run away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection…”

Sahīh Al-Bukhārī (no. 7042).
