Question 23: How will the gathering (Hashr) of the creation take place on the Day of Resurrection?

Answer: The gathering (Hashr) of the creation on the Day of Resurrection will be of two types:

(1) Gathering in the sense of being driven toward the Plain of Assembly:

As narrated in the reports of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih al-Muslim from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ said:

“People will be gathered in three groups: (one group) will be those who are hopeful and fearful; (the second group) will be those where two people will be on one camel, three on one camel, four on one camel, and even ten on one camel; and the rest of the people will be gathered by the Fire (this third group will be the people of Shirk). When they stop for a midday nap, the Fire will be with them; when they spend the night, the Fire will be there with them; when they reach the morning, the Fire will be there; and when they reach the evening, the Fire will be there with them.” — [Sahih al-Bukhari: 6522, Sahih Muslim: 2861]

(2) Gathering in the sense of standing in a single plain, awaiting judgment:

As narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) (1), he said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“You will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.” Upon hearing this, the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) (2), asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Will we look at or see the private parts of one another?” He ﷺ replied: “On that Day, every person will have a condition that will make him heedless and indifferent to anyone else.” — [Sahih al-Bukhari: 6527, Sahih Muslim: 2859]

Question 24: What is meant by the Resurrection (Ba’th)? What is the ruling on believing in it, and what is the ruling on its denier?

Answer: Resurrection (Ba’th) refers to people coming out of their graves alive. This will occur when Israfil (peace be upon him) blows into the Trumpet (Sur) by the command of his Lord, causing people to rise from their graves, as Allah the Blessed and Exalted said:

Translation: "And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is within the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on."

Allah (Glorified be He) also said:

Translation: "And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten."

The Ruling on Belief:

It is mandatory (Wajib) to believe in the Resurrection, as it is one of the pillars of faith (Iman).

The Ruling on the Denier:

Whoever denies the Resurrection, or denies any of the matters established to occur on that day—such as Paradise and Hell, the recompense and punishment for deeds, crossing the Sirat bridge, the Scales (Mizan), the receiving of the records of deeds in the hands, the Fountain of Kauthar, the Intercession (Shafa’at), and other such matters which are definitively known and established in the Sharia (necessities of religion)—has certainly wandered far from the right path. Allah the Almighty said:

Translation: "Those who disbelieve have claimed that they will never be resurrected. Say, 'Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected; then you will surely be informed of what you did. And that, for Allah, is easy.'"

With this, the answers to the twenty-four questions are complete. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his companions.

Biographical Notes

(1) Abdullah bin Abbas:

He is Abdullah bin Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim, the cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was born three years before the Hijrah. The Prophet ﷺ prayed for him to be granted a deep understanding of religion and knowledge of the interpretation (Tafsir) of the Quran. Due to the vastness of his knowledge, he was called al-Bahr (the Ocean) and was also given the title al-Habr (the Great Scholar). In the later part of his life, he lost his eyesight. He passed away in 68 AH in Taif. May Allah have mercy on him and be pleased with him. [At-Taqrib (1/425), Al-Isabah (2/322)]

(2) Aisha bint Abi Bakr:

She is the Mother of the Believers, Aisha bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq. She is, without exception, the most learned (Faqih) among all women. Excluding Sayyidah Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her), she is the most virtuous among all the pure wives of the Prophet ﷺ; however, there is a well-known difference of opinion among scholars regarding the comparison (between her and Khadija). According to the correct view, Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away in 57 AH. [At-Taqrib (2/606)]
