The Grave Consequences of Wronging Others in the Hereafter: Understanding Divine Justice
In the teachings of Islam, the concept of justice and the prohibition of wronging others is central. Every human being, regardless of status, wealth, or power, is accountable before Allah for their actions toward others. Wronging others is one of the gravest sins that one can commit, and the consequences of such actions extend far beyond this worldly life into the Hereafter. This reflection aims to remind us of the importance of safeguarding the rights of others, the severe consequences of transgression, and the urgent need for repentance.
Allah’s Command Regarding Wrongdoing
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, has made it clear in the Qur’an that the unjust will face the consequences of their actions. He says:
“Blame is only on those who wrong people and transgress in the land unjustly. It is they who will suffer a painful punishment.”
{Ash-Shūrā || Verse 42}
This verse emphasizes that wronging others is a serious offense. Whether it is by harming someone’s honor, property, or life, or by oppressing them in any form, such actions are considered transgressions in the sight of Allah. The punishment for such behavior will be severe, as it involves not just violating the rights of other human beings, but also defying the divine command of justice.
Another verse that reflects the gravity of this issue is:
“˹All˺ sovereignty that Day is for ALLĀH; HE will judge between them.”
{Al-Hajj || Verse 56}
On the Day of Judgment, Allah alone will have the final say in all matters, and no one can escape His justice. Every wrong done in this world will be weighed, and the oppressor will be held accountable, regardless of their status or power in this life.
The Day of Resurrection: Rights Will Be Restored
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) explained that on the Day of Judgment, justice will be established in a way that is unimaginable to us. A powerful hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) states:
“On the Resurrection Day, the rights will be paid to those to whom they are due so much so that a hornless sheep will be retaliated for by punishing the horned sheep which broke its horns.”
{Muslim}
This hadith highlights the absolute justice of Allah. Even the smallest transgressions will be rectified. If a horned sheep unjustly harms a hornless sheep, on the Day of Judgment, the harm will be avenged. This metaphor serves to illustrate the meticulous nature of divine justice. Nothing will go unnoticed, and all wrongs will be righted, no matter how small they may seem to us in this world.
The Bankrupt of the Day of Judgment
The Prophet (ﷺ) also warned about the dire consequences for those who engage in wrongdoing despite performing acts of worship. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) once asked:
“Do you know who are bankrupt?”
They replied, “The one without money or goods is bankrupt.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Verily, the bankrupt of my nation are those who come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers, fasting, and charity, but also with insults, slander, consuming wealth, shedding blood, and beating others. The oppressed will each be given from his good deeds. If his good deeds run out before justice is fulfilled, then their sins will be cast upon him and he will be thrown into the Hellfire.”
{Muslim #2581}
In this profound hadith, the Prophet (ﷺ) explained that on the Day of Judgment, it will not be enough to simply have performed acts of worship like prayer, fasting, and charity. If someone has wronged others, their good deeds will be taken to compensate for the harm they caused. If their good deeds are insufficient, the oppressed will be given from their own deeds, and the wrongdoer will be burdened with the sins of those they wronged. This is the ultimate form of bankruptcy: a person who has no deeds to protect them and faces the wrath of Allah.
Seeking Pardon for Wrongdoing
The Prophet (ﷺ) also emphasized the importance of seeking forgiveness for any wrongs committed in this life, before it is too late. He said:
“Whoever has wronged his brother with regard to his honour or anything else, let him seek his pardon today, before there will be no dinar or dirham (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection), when if he has any good deeds (to his credit), some of his good deeds will be taken in proportion to his wrongdoing, and if he has no good deeds, then some of the bad deeds of the one whom he wronged will be taken and added to his burden.”
{Al-Bukhārī #2449}
This hadith reminds us of the urgency of seeking forgiveness from those we have wronged in this life. There will be no currency or wealth to settle the debt of injustice on the Day of Judgment. The only way to resolve these issues is through repentance and seeking forgiveness from those whom we have wronged. If we fail to do so, we will bear the burden of their sins, and the punishment of Allah will be our consequence.
The Rights of Others: A Sacred Trust
Sheikh al-Uthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him) elaborated on the gravity of violating the rights of others. He explained that the Prophet (ﷺ), in his Farewell Sermon, outlined the sacredness of three things:
- Blood: Violating someone’s life through murder, physical harm, or unjust aggression is a grave sin.
- Property: Stealing, usurping, or unlawfully benefiting from another person’s property is a form of oppression.
- Honor: Slandering, gossiping, or spreading lies about others, as well as engaging in acts that damage a person’s dignity, such as adultery or sodomy, are considered serious violations.
These three aspects of a person’s life—blood, property, and honor—are sacred. To wrong someone in any of these areas is to transgress against the sacred boundaries set by Allah. Such injustices will not go unpunished, and the wrongdoer will find no one to defend them when they stand before Allah.
The Importance of Justice in Islam
Islam places great emphasis on justice. The Quran commands us to uphold justice in every aspect of our lives:
“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.”
{An-Nisa || Verse 135}
Justice is not only about following the law of the land but also about respecting the rights of others and ensuring that no harm comes to them. This applies to all aspects of life: whether dealing with family members, colleagues, strangers, or even those who are less fortunate.
Conclusion: A Call for Reflection and Repentance
The consequences of wronging others in this world and the Hereafter are severe. On the Day of Judgment, no one will be able to escape the justice of Allah. Every wrong will be accounted for, and no transgression will go unnoticed. Therefore, we must be mindful of how we treat others and take every opportunity to seek forgiveness for any wrongs we have committed.
Let us strive to protect the blood, property, and honor of others. Let us reflect on the sacredness of these rights and take steps to repair any harm we may have caused. The time to seek forgiveness is now, before the Day when no wealth or worldly possessions can save us. The Day of Judgment is a day of reckoning, and only those who have lived in justice and sincerity will find peace.
May Allah guide us all to act justly, uphold the rights of others, and seek His forgiveness for any wrongs we have committed. Ameen.
