The Ruling on Al-Far’ and Al-‘Ateerah in Islam: A Guide
What has come concerning Aqeeqah, 3rd Lesson | Benefits from Muntaqaa Ibn Al-Jarood

Lesson of Al-Far’ and ‘Ateerah
913 – Mahmood bin Adam narrated to us, he said Sufyan narrated to us, on the authority of Az-Zuhri, on the authority of Sa’eed, on the authority of Abee Hurairah, may Allaah be pleased with him on the authority of the Prophet ﷺ that he said:”(There is) no far’ and no ‘ateerah.”
the hadith is authentic reported by Bukhari and Muslim
•Al-Far’: The first born of the animal.
And there are many opinions regarding it:
• It is said that they used to slaughter it and not keep it in their possession, seeking blessings through its mother and for her progeny to be many.
• It is said the (people) of pre-islamic days of ignorance used to slaughter it for their idols.
• It is said when a man’s camels reached a hundred he would slaughter every year one camel
It wasn’t from the affair of the Muslims to slaughter it for its mother seeking blessings.
And his statement “No far’ “; this negation is intended to be for prohibition.
Al-Ateerah: A slaughter which they used to slaughter in the first ten days of Rajab and they used to call it ‘Rajabiyyah’.
Al-Far’: differing opinions have occurred concerning its meaning into numerous opinions.
↪️ It is said it is the firstborn of the animal
↪️ It is said it is charity given in order for its mother to be blessed
↪️ It is said they used to slaughter it for the false deities and idols.
↪️ It is said that it is abrogated
↪️ And there is a statement that it’s not abrogated and this is the position of Shaafi’ee and he said it went from Wujuub (obligation) to Isthibaab (recommendation).
🔹 The opinion that it is abrogated is the closest to correctness…
🔹 The conclusion is that Al-Far’ is not legislated because it is from the actions of the people of pre-islamic days of ignorance.
🔹 ‘Ateerah is not legislated because it is abrogated by the sacrificial animal for Eid ul-Adhaa.
🔹 There is evidence that it was performed after the pre-islamic days of ignorance then it was abrogated in the hadith
(In every Saa’ibah(a she-camel let loose for free pasture for their false gods, e.g. idols, etc., and nothing was allowed to be carried on it) there is a Far’….)
And the hadith of Aa’ishah (The people were ordered with the Far’ and ‘Ateerah, with one out of every 50 animals).
These numerous hadiths suggest that it was done after pre-islamic days of ignorance then it was abrogated, and in a wording of Nasaa’ee (He prohibited the Far’ and the ‘Ateerah).
And the majority of scholars are upon its abrogation.
Conclusion
That Al-Far’ is from the actions of the pre-islamic days of ignorance, so when Islam came they slaughtered for Allah the Far’ and ‘Ateerah, then they were prohibited from that.
• So the statement of its abrogation is correct, so it is not legislated to do Al-Far’ or Al-‘Ateerah nor is it recommended.
