The Shari’ah Status of Valentine’s Day:
۔﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌﹌
Alhamdulillah….!!
Those who criticize Islam raise the objection that Islam is an enemy of love, whereas this is an outright lie. Islam not only permits love but also mentions numerous rewards to encourage those who love, on the condition that the love is true, pure, and for the pleasure of Allah.
Let us now try to briefly understand love.
What is love?
Love is a natural and powerful emotion that can happen to anyone, with anyone, at any time.
There are two types of love:
Pure love and impure love.
Pure Love:
Pure love is based on sincerity, sacrifice, and loyalty, and it always remains lasting and eternal. It is free from all kinds of personal interest, selfishness, and disloyalty.
Impure Love:
Vile love is based on financial, personal, and sexual base interests, selfishness, and disloyalty. It is always weak and ends quickly; in fact, its outcome is enmity.
Islam’s Concept of Love:
If there is any religion in the entire universe that is the greatest proponent of love and encourages the promotion of love, it is only Islam, in which love is declared the foundation of faith.
Loving for the sake of Allah is one of the means of completing faith.
✦ It is narrated from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
﴿مَنْ أَحَبَّ لِلَّهِ وَأَبْغَضَ لِلَّهِ وَأَعْطَى لِلَّهِ وَمَنَعَ لِلَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَكْمَلَ الإِيمَانَ
::: Whoever loves for Allah’s sake, hates for Allah’s sake, gives for Allah’s sake, and withholds for Allah’s sake, has indeed perfected his faith.﴾
(Sunan Abu Dawood / Hadith 4681)
Imam al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) declared it Sahih (authentic).
Loving for Allah is one of the means of strengthening faith.
✦ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him):
﴿ يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ أَيُّ عُرَى الإِيمَانِ أَوْثَقُ
O Abu Dharr, do you know which is the firmest handhold of faith?﴾
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied:
Allah and His Messenger know best.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then said:
الْمُوَالاةُ فِي اللَّهِ ، وَ المُعَادَاةُ فِي الله ، وَالْحُبُّ فِي اللَّهِ ، وَالْبُغْضُ فِي اللَّهِ:::
To have friendship for the sake of Allah, to have enmity for the sake of Allah, to love for the sake of Allah, and to hate for the sake of Allah.﴾
(Sahih al-Jami’ as-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh / Hadith 2539)
(As-Silsilah as-Sahihah 1728 • Hasan lishawahidihi)
Loving one another is one of the means of attaining the love of Allah, the Glorified and Exalted.
✦ Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:
قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَجَبَتْ مَحَبَّتِى لِلْمُتَحَابِّينَ فِىَّ وَالْمُتَجَالِسِينَ فِىَّ وَالْمُتَزَاوِرِينَ فِىَّ وَالْمُتَبَاذِلِينَ فِىَّ
Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has said: My love is obligatory for those who love each other for My sake, who sit together for My sake, who visit each other for My sake, and who spend their energies (for the good of each other) for My sake.
(Sahih Ibn Hibban / Hadith 575)
(Muwatta Malik / Hadith 1748)
(Musnad Ahmad / Hadith 22680 / from the Ahadith of Mu’adh ibn Jabal, Hadith no. 47)
(Sahih al-Jami’ as-Saghir wa Ziyadatuh / Hadith 4331)
Loving for the sake of Allah is one of the means of attaining a status admired even by the Prophets and martyrs.
✦ The second Caliph of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), Amir al-Mu’minin ‘Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ﴿
:::Indeed, among the servants of Allah are some people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, but on the Day of Resurrection, the prophets and martyrs will admire their status before Allah.﴾
The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) asked, “”O Messenger of Allah, tell us who those people are?”””,
He replied: ﴿
:::They are people who love each other for the sake of Allah, without any blood relationship between them (other than faith) nor any financial dealings. By Allah, their faces will be radiant, and they will be upon light. They will not fear when the people fear (on the Day of Resurrection), and they will not grieve when the people grieve.﴾
And then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) recited this blessed verse:
أَلاَ إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ لاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ
Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
(Sunan Abu Dawood / Hadith 3527 / Kitab al-Ijarah / Bab 42)
In this blessed hadith, Allah Almighty informed through the blessed tongue of His Messenger (ﷺ) that those believers who love each other for the sake of Allah, only for the sake of Allah, are counted among those allies of Allah who will have no fear or grief on the Day of Resurrection, and they will attain such a high rank with Allah that even the prophets and martyrs will feel envy upon seeing it.
Love is one of the means of receiving the shade of Allah’s Throne on the Day of Resurrection.
✦ Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقُولُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَيْنَ الْمُتَحَابُّونَ بِجَلاَلِى الْيَوْمَ أُظِلُّهُمْ فِى ظِلِّى يَوْمَ لاَ ظِلَّ إِلاَّ ظِلِّى
:Indeed, on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will say, “Where are those who loved each other for My Majesty’s sake? Today, on a day when there is no shade but My shade (of the Throne), I will give them shade under My Throne.”
(Sahih Muslim / Hadith 2566_Kitab al-Birr was-Silah wal-Adab / Bab 12)
✦ In the noble hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) about the seven types of people who will be given shade under the Throne, it is stated:
On the day when there will be no shade except the shade of Allah’s (Throne), Allah will give shade to seven people under His (Throne): (1) a just ruler, (2) a youth who grew up engaged in the worship of his Lord, (3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, (4) two men who love each other only for Allah’s sake, meeting for that love and parting upon that love, (5) a man who is invited (to sin) by a woman of rank and beauty, and he (rejecting her invitation) says, “I fear Allah,” (6) a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given, and (7) a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears.
(Sahih al-Bukhari / Hadith 660)
(Sahih Muslim / Hadith 1031)
Signs of Those Who Love for the Sake of Allah
Enjoining good upon one another, admonishing each other to refrain from evil, and helping each other in the completion of both these tasks.
✦ Allah, the Glorified and Exalted, says:
وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ
:::And the believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.﴾ (Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 71)
Among those who believe, only those who love each other for the sake of Allah are seen acting upon this command of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. Otherwise, there are millions of believers, billions of Muslims. How many are there who enjoin good upon one another? Who advise each other to avoid evil and sins?
Those who do, however many they are, can, Insha’Allah (if Allah wills), be among those who love each other for the sake of Allah.
Feeling each other’s pain and sorrow exactly like their own, and being merciful, compassionate, and helpful to one another.
✦ Sayings of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ):
﴿تَرَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِى تَوَادِّهِمْ وَتَرَاحُمِهِمْ وَتَعَاطُفِهِمْ مَثَلُ الْجَسَدِ إِذَا اشْتَكَى مِنْهُ عُضْوٌ تَدَاعَى لَهُ سَائِرُ الْجَسَدِ بِالسَّهَرِ وَالْحُمَّى
:::The example of the believers in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion is that of a single body. When any part of the body is in pain, the whole body joins it in wakefulness and fever.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6011)
(Sahih Muslim / Hadith 6751 / Kitab al-Birr was-Silah wal-Adab)
✦ The noble saying of the Prophet of the universe, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), is:
“By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something which, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread the greeting of salam among yourselves.”
(Sahih Muslim: Book of Faith | Chapter: The believers will not enter Paradise except the believers, Hadith no. 54)
As the custodian of the message of love, the religion of Islam, being a pure religion itself, commands its followers to always adopt purity in every matter and accepts only purity.
✦ The noble saying of our master Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), is: “O people!
Indeed, Allah is pure and accepts nothing but that which is pure.”
(Sahih Muslim: Book of Zakat | Chapter: Acceptance of charity from good earnings and its growth, Hadith no. 1014)
That is why pure love is adopted only by those who love a pure religion like Islam and are themselves Muslims and believers.
Every person loves someone like themselves:
From the beginning of the universe, it has been an established rule that every person in the world loves people with a character similar to their own and seeks their companionship. For example: polytheists, disbelievers, adulterers, drunkards, thieves, robbers, murderers, etc.—all sinners love sinners like themselves. Similarly, Muslims and believers only love Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) and other believers.
And Allah Almighty gathers these people in this world according to this arrangement, and in the Hereafter, their fate will be with those whom they sincerely loved in the world.
✦ Allah Almighty says:
"Vile women are for vile men, and vile men are for vile women. And pure men are for pure women, and pure women are for pure men."
(Surah An-Nur: 26) (See also: An-Nur: 3)
This is their mutual love and interaction with characters like themselves in this world. Similarly, in the Hereafter, these people will be raised with characters like their own.
✦ "That Day, the people will be issued in separate groups to be shown their deeds. So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it."
(Surah Az-Zalzalah, Verse 8)
✦ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “(In a dream) Upon my asking, Gabriel and Michael (peace be upon them) told me that among the scenes you were shown, the first person you passed, whose jaws, nostrils, and eyes were being torn to the back of his head with an iron tool, was the person who would leave his house in the morning and fabricate lies that would spread throughout the world. The other naked men and women you saw burning in an oven were adulterous men and women. And the third person who was drowning in a river of blood and having stones repeatedly put in his mouth was the person who was a usurer in the world.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: Hadith no. 1386)
✦ The noble saying of the venerable Prophet (ﷺ) is: “(On the Day of Resurrection) a man will be with the one he loved (in the world).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: Kitab al-Adab, Bab ‘Alamat Hubb Allah ‘Azzawajal)
From the aforementioned evidence, it is proven that on the Day of Resurrection, every person’s fate will be based on their worldly friendships, love, and deeds, and each will either be subjected to the severest punishment with individuals of their own kind or will be in the best of blessings.
Who Deserves Pure Love?
From an Islamic perspective, the one most deserving of pure love is Allah Almighty, then the beloved of Allah, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and after that, all the people of faith.
Attaining these loves is obligatory for every Muslim; without them, faith is incomplete.
✦ Allah Almighty says:
"Your ally is none but Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed - those who establish prayer and give zakah, and they bow [in worship]. And whoever is an ally of Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed - then indeed, the party of Allah - they will be the predominant."
(Surah Al-Ma’idah: 55-56)
✦ The blessed saying of the Prophet of Mercy (ﷺ) is: “Do not take anyone as a friend except a believer.”
(Abu Dawood: Kitab al-Adab, Bab Man Yu’mar an Yujalis, Hadith no. 4832)
‘✦A man is upon the religion of his friend (beloved), so each of you should look to whom he befriends.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith no. 4833)
The religion of Islam gives importance to success in the Hereafter in every matter. In this regard, it is necessary for every Muslim to consider the otherworldly consequences before loving anyone.
Pure love is the means of salvation. The real love is that which is selfless, sincere, and everlasting. And what love can be more lasting and eternal than that which is beneficial not only in this world but also in the Hereafter and becomes a means of salvation?
✦ Allah Almighty says:
“Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah who believed in Allah and became righteous, there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words of Allah. That is what is the great attainment.”
(Surah Yunus: 62)
✦ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Among the servants of Allah, there are some people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, but on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will grant them such ranks that even the prophets and martyrs will be proud of. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! Who will those people be?’ He (ﷺ) replied: ‘These will be people who love each other for the sake of attaining the mercy (pleasure) of Allah, without any relationship or financial transaction between them. By Allah! Their faces will be luminous, and they will be upon pulpits of light. When people are fearful, they will have no fear. When people are grieving, they will be without grief.’ After that, the noble Messenger recited this (aforementioned, Surah Yunus, Verse 62).”
(Sunan Abi Dawood: Kitab al-Buyu’, Bab fi ar-Rahn, Hadith no. 3527)
The Worst End of Impure Love
Those who pride themselves on their self-made friendships in the world, who ruin their Hereafter in the desire for proximity to their beloveds, and who claim to sacrifice everything at the hint of their eyebrow will become the worst of enemies on the Day of Resurrection. They will blame each other for this terrible outcome of their love and will express shame and remorse for their actions.
Just read how the true word of Allah depicts the scene of the Day of Resurrection:
✦ "Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous."
(Surah Az-Zukhruf: 67)
Those who would die for each other in the world will all become enemies of one another; no one will be a companion to anyone.
But even at that time, the friendship of the God-fearing will remain, because their love was for the pleasure of Allah, so it will endure.
✦ "And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. He led me astray from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.'"
(Surah Al-Furqan: 27, 28, 29)
That is why the Shari’ah has made Taqwa (piety) the standard for love and friendship in the world, that (Al-Hubbu lillah wal-Bughdu lillah) love and enmity should only be for the sake of Allah… that’s it!
After briefly discussing friendship and love, we come to the main topic.
The Reality of Valentine’s Day
Several contradictory narrations exist in historical books regarding Valentine’s Day, but most of them consist of fabricated stories. Some narrations are found with reference to the renowned research institution “Britannica Encyclopedia,” reading which reveals that this day is a special day of religious rituals for the Catholic sect of Christians. The original term is “Saint Valentine.” This is a Latin word. The translation of “Saint” is “elder” or “holy man,” which is used for priests. The people of the Catholic sect of Christians believe that every year on February 14th, the souls of priests named “Valentine” come to the world. Therefore, they perform all the routines of that day, including worship and offerings, in their names. This belief originated with the Romans. Then this day began to be celebrated specifically in France and England, and on this day, there is a holiday in France, England, and other Western countries, and they perform special types of worship in their places of worship on this day. Due to the irrationality of this custom and the opposition of respected Christian priests, this day had almost disappeared. A biased Christian scholar of the fourteenth century, “Henry Ansgar Kelly,” wrote a book specifically on this topic (available on the internet) titled “Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine” and reintroduced it to the world as a day of love through self-made stories of romance and love. In the eighteenth century, it received official patronage in France and England, and then gradually, this self-proclaimed day of love began to be celebrated worldwide every year with more novelty and enthusiasm.
(For more details, see: Saint Valentine – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, etc.)
Hidden Facts
The historical status of this day and the current way of celebrating it help us understand its implications and hidden facts, which are:
This day is an invention of Christians. It is a day of their polytheistic worship. Even Christian priests are against it. After it had become obsolete, a biased Christian scholar revived it. It is celebrated under official patronage in Christian countries. All the stories of love and romance told about its importance are false.
In the present era, those who celebrate it are generally homosexuals, adulterers, lovers of vulgarity, and the pro-Western class, and this day holds special importance among such people, meaning it is a festival of impure people.
The Jews, Christians, and all disbelievers and polytheists are the eternal and perpetual enemies of Islam and Muslims. On the issue of wiping out Islam and Muslims, they are all verbally and practically in agreement and united. On one hand, they have unleashed a market of slaughter and plunder against Muslim countries through illegal occupation and devastating bombings. On the other hand, their women and children are being abducted, and they are being forced into illicit relations and hard labor. And on the third hand, by declaring Islam an uncivilized, conservative, and fundamentalist religion, their own filthy and impure civilization is being portrayed as modern and moderate, and by promoting it among Muslims, vigorous efforts are being made to eliminate their sense of honor and dignity in faith and to popularize sexual promiscuity among young Muslim men and women. The truth of all these things is as clear as day in their books and daily statements.
So, O Muslims! Counter these conspiracies of the disbelievers in the form of love for Islam. Your love for your religion, your faith in it, and your practice of it can turn their conspiracies against them. Therefore, from today, make it forbidden upon yourselves to resemble the disbelievers in any matter and to participate in their rituals.
Some verses and hadiths are worth mentioning regarding Valentine’s Day.
In the Holy Quran, Allah says:
✦ Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread among those who have believed - will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.
(Surah An-Nur, Verse 19)
Those who wish a happy Valentine’s on the internet, share posts, and whoever becomes a means of spreading immodesty among Muslims in any way, all fall under the warning mentioned in this blessed verse.
✦ The Prophet’s ﷺ statement:
On the Day of Resurrection, three people will neither enter Paradise nor will Allah look at them:
- One who is disobedient to his parents,
- A second is a woman who imitates a man’s appearance,
- A third is the Dayyooth (who tolerates immodesty in his wife and children).
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith no. 6180)
✦ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“A believer is not a taunter, nor a curser, nor shameless, nor foul-mouthed.”
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith no. 1977)
✦ The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“You will follow the ways of the nations before you, span by span and cubit by cubit, so much so that if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would follow them.” We asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians?”
He said, “Who else?”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith no. 7320)
✦ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith no. 4031)
From all these hadiths and verses, it is known that celebrating Valentine’s, which is a day of immodesty, is a cause of spreading immodesty among Muslims and imitating the disbelievers, which is entirely a sin.
Any form of assistance from a Muslim on Valentine’s Day and other such impermissible festivals is also forbidden, whether in the form of food and drink, buying and selling, products, gifts, letters, announcements, etc., because all of this falls under the category of sin and transgression, and it is disobedience to Allah and His Messenger.
While Allah Ta’ala’s command is:
✦ (وتعاونوا على البر والتقوى ولا تعاونوا على الإثم والعدوان واتقوا الله إن الله شديد العقاب)
Translation: And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, Verse 2)
Perhaps hardly anyone knows the true background of Valentine’s Day, but by associating with it, a great deal of immodesty is practiced on this day, which even a common person knows. Deviating from the daily routine, the prices of flowers increase. Cheeks, which should be covered by a veil, are marked with hearts and who knows what other signs, inviting sin, and celebrations are held without thinking that we are Muslims…!
What does Islam teach us…?
Some people with little sense say… well!
Islam does not forbid love…!
In response to them, the submission is that Islam does not forbid love, but it forbids immodesty. Islam protects honor; it does not bare it on public roads and in clubs and condemns this very thing…
If those who celebrate this day are asked if they would like someone to present a flower to their sister, wife, or daughter on an open road and invite her to sin…?
Then the answer that will certainly come, you must have understood it too, but what kind of a situation is this that if someone else does it, they are ready to kill, but if they do it themselves, it’s love…!
Wow, O man, your self-admiration.
No one knows that this drama of love like Valentine’s ends in one night 99.99% of the time, so what kind of love is this, brother…?
Can anyone who celebrates it explain?
No religion, no civilization, no culture in the world can permit such immodesty, but those who object only point out Islam.
The sad thing is that outsiders are outsiders, but our own people are also at the forefront of this work. Whereas there is no other religion as clean, pure, modern, ideal, and loving as Islam. What greater example of love can there be than the fact that Islam has even taken care of a voiceless animal, teaching that its rights should not be violated.
The Muslim has become unable to understand that this is a dirty Western culture. This festival is not even an Islamic festival of theirs. They are leaving their mud-stained culture among us so that we may leave this religion, which one man took up and dominated the entire world, at a distance of a mile from whom disbelief would tremble with fear. But who will awaken this young generation?
How well the poet said:
“The eggs of the new civilization are rotten.”
They are only concerned with enjoyment, whether it is Islamic or un-Islamic, it doesn’t matter. Some people say that it is not necessary to wish a happy Valentine’s Day to a girl or boy. You can say it to your wife, you can say it to your mother. The question to these enemies of intellect is, is there only one day for love?
And which man who celebrates this day says it to his mother or sister?? Whereas all this is celebrated in markets, colleges, universities, and other places only for debauchery.
May Allah forgive us all and give us the understanding that this is nothing but immodesty and vulgarity.
May Allah protect the honor of us all and grant us the ability to stop this day and stay away from it.
(Ameen)
