Can a Woman Wear Perfume to the Mosque for Friday Prayers?
Question: If a woman, after performing ghusl on Friday, accidentally applies perfume with a mild scent and needs to go to the mosque for Friday prayers in 20 minutes, can she go if the perfume is not on her abaya, or does she need to change her clothes? The mosque has a completely separate hall for women.
Answer: It is strictly prohibited for a woman to go to the mosque wearing perfume. If a woman has applied perfume on her body or clothes and wishes to go to the mosque, she must wash off the perfume from her body. This is based on the hadith:
Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “When a woman goes to the mosque, she should wash off the perfume as she washes off impurity (after sexual intercourse)” (Sunan an-Nasa’i: 5130, authenticated by Al-Albani).
Therefore, if a woman has applied perfume, whether intentionally or unintentionally, she must completely remove the scent from her body and clothes before going to the mosque, regardless of whether the scent is mild or strong, and regardless of the time it takes to reach the mosque. The key is that a woman should follow the prophetic instructions regarding going to the mosque.
Additionally, it is not only prohibited for a woman to go to the mosque wearing perfume, but it is also not permissible for her to leave the house wearing perfume. Consider the severity of the warning in this hadith: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Any woman who applies perfume and passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance is an adulteress” (Sunan an-Nasa’i: 5129, authenticated by Al-Albani).
