Understanding Tahiyyat al-Wudu: Can it be Combined with Other Prayers?

Question: Can one intend to perform Tahiyyat al-Wudu (the prayer of ablution) along with the Sunnah prayer?

Answer: Tahiyyat al-Wudu is not an independent prayer; it is a prayer that can be performed when there is no other prayer to be performed, similar to Tahiyyat al-Masjid (the prayer of greeting the mosque). If there is an obligatory or Sunnah prayer to be performed, then that prayer should be performed. Since Tahiyyat al-Wudu is not an independent prayer, it is permissible to combine its intention with the Sunnah Mu’akkadah (emphasized Sunnah) prayer. There is no harm in doing so.
