What to Do If Menstruation Stops and Resumes After a Few Days: Islamic Guidelines

Islamic Ruling on Menstruation That Stops and Resumes After a Few Days

Question: A woman experiences menstruation for two days, then it stops, and after six or seven days, it resumes. Should she consider the two days as menstruation and refrain from praying, or should she wait until the entire period ends?

Answer: It can happen that menstruation occurs for a few days, then stops, and resumes after a few days. There are two important points to consider in this situation:

1. If the menstruation ends and white discharge is observed, any brownish discharge or spots that appear afterward will not be considered menstruation, whether they appear after one, two, or three days, or even after a few days.

2. If menstruation occurs for a few days, then there is a gap of one or two days of dryness, and then bleeding resumes, it is important to check if the resumed bleeding has the characteristics of menstrual blood, such as being dark, thick, and having a foul odor. If it has these characteristics, the resumed bleeding will also be considered menstruation, and the woman should refrain from praying during this time. Additionally, the total duration of both the initial and resumed bleeding should not exceed fifteen days. Any bleeding beyond fifteen days will be considered Istihadah (irregular bleeding).

Regarding the two days of dryness, the woman should perform Ghusl (ritual purification) and continue her prayers.
