Etiquette for Entering the Mosque During the Call to Prayer
Question: If the Imam is seated on the pulpit and the Adhan (call to prayer) is being called, what should a person entering the mosque do at that time?
Answer: The person entering the mosque can immediately perform the Tahiyyat al-Masjid (two units of prayer for greeting the mosque) without responding to the Adhan, as responding to the Adhan is Sunnah (recommended) and not obligatory. However, it is better to listen to the Adhan, respond to it, recite the supplication after the Adhan, and then perform the Tahiyyat al-Masjid. This way, they will receive the reward for both actions.
Tahiyyat al-Masjid is the prayer for which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) instructed a person who sat during the sermon to stand up and perform. Therefore, anyone who enters the mosque during the sermon should perform two light units of prayer before sitting down.
