Can Teachers Receive Zakat for Teaching Quran to Orphan Children?

Is It Permissible to Pay Quran Teachers with Zakat?

Question: Can a teacher be paid from charity or zakat for teaching the Quran to orphan children?

Answer: Zakat has eight categories of recipients, including the poor and needy. If the person teaching orphan children falls under the category of poor or needy, then they can be given zakat. However, if they do not belong to this category, zakat cannot be given to them. As for optional charity, it is primarily the right of the poor and needy, but in cases of necessity, it can also be given to the wealthy, so charity can be given to the teacher.
