Islamic Ruling on Wearing Fragrance Outdoors for Women: Permissible or Not?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Question: Is it permissible for a woman to wear a fragrance that does not spread like regular perfume but can be smelled by someone standing close to her when she goes outside?
Answer: It is not permissible for a woman to wear such a fragrance when going outside because, even though it does not spread widely, it can still be smelled by those close to her. Therefore, it is not allowed for a woman to wear such a fragrance outside. However, there is no harm in wearing it while staying at home.
The essence of a woman’s fragrance is its color, meaning she should use something that has color but no scent, like henna. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The fragrance for men is that which has a noticeable scent but a hidden color, and the fragrance for women is that which has a noticeable color but a hidden scent.” (Sunan al-Nasa’i: 5120, authenticated by al-Albani)
