Understanding Brown Discharge in Islam: Menstruation or Purity?
Question: Some women experience light brown or dark brown discharge a day or two before or after menstruation. Should this be considered menstruation or a state of purity?
Answer: If the brown discharge occurs immediately before or after menstruation, it is considered part of menstruation. However, if there is a clear interval of dryness before or after the menstrual flow, the brown discharge is not considered part of menstruation. Umm Atiyyah (RA) said: “We did not consider the brown or yellow discharge after purity as anything significant.” (Sahih Abi Dawood: 307).
