Praying in Mosques with Attached Cemeteries: What You Need to Know

Understanding the Permissibility of Offering Prayers in Mosques with Graves

Question: Some mosques have cemeteries attached to them, or there are one or two built graves inside the mosque. Can we offer prayers in such mosques?

Answer: First, we need to understand what constitutes a mosque, which is the designated area for offering prayers. If a cemetery or a grave is inside the boundary of the mosque, then it is not permissible to offer prayers in that mosque. However, if the mosque is separate from the cemetery, even if the cemetery is adjacent to the mosque, but the mosque’s boundary is distinct from the cemetery, then prayers can be offered in that mosque. If there is a grave or graves inside the mosque’s boundary, offering prayers in such a mosque is not permissible.
