What Happens to the ‘Iddah Waiting Period After Divorce Notification?
Question: A girl returned to her father’s house and asked for a divorce. The husband never once mentioned the word “divorce” while living together. The girl has now received a notice of divorce from her husband. Will her waiting period (‘iddah) start now, or will it start after the third notice of divorce?
Answer: The waiting period (‘iddah) starts from the moment the husband issues a divorce. Therefore, the woman does not need to wait for two or three notices. The waiting period begins from the date written on the first notice. The date of the divorce should be mentioned in the notice, and from that date, the woman must observe her ‘iddah for three menstrual cycles.
