Meaningful Duas and Prayers for Your Deceased Mother
Question: My mother has passed away. Can you provide some prayers I can recite for her in tashahhud and sujood?
Answer: You can make du’a for your mother in any language; it does not have to be in Arabic. It is also not necessary to restrict your prayers to tashahhud or sujood. Rather, you should consistently pray for her elevation in rank, forgiveness of minor faults, and admission into Jannah.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “A man’s rank in Paradise will be elevated, and he will ask, ‘How did I get here?’ It will be said, ‘By your child seeking forgiveness for you.’” (Ibn Majah: 3660)
Here is a beautiful prayer you can recite for the deceased:
Translation: “O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him, give him peace and absolve him. Receive him with honour and make his grave spacious; wash him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from faults as Thou wouldst cleanse a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his mate. Admit him to the Garden, and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Hellfire.” (Sahih Muslim: 963)
You can also recite this prayer from the Qur’an:
Translation: “Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day when the reckoning will be established.”(Ibrahim: 41)
