Zakat Calculation for Cash Gifts, Gold, and Salaries: What You Need to Know
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Question and Answer
Question: If a bride receives money as a gift from relatives, should this amount be included when calculating Zakat? Also, if a woman works and buys gold with her salary, should Zakat be calculated on the entire salary or only on the remaining amount after purchasing gold?
Answer: Here, you need to understand the Zakat for three things:
- Cash money Zakat
- Gold Zakat
- Silver Zakat
Zakat for each of these is calculated separately. If the cash money reaches the Nisab (minimum amount for Zakat) and remains for a year, Zakat is due on it at the end of the year. The same rule applies to gold: if someone possesses 85 grams or more of gold or gold jewelry and a year passes, 2.5% Zakat must be given. The same applies to silver: if it reaches the Nisab and remains for a year, 2.5% Zakat must be given.
Therefore, the money from your salary, gifts, or any other sources should be combined. When a year is completed, 2.5% Zakat should be given on the total amount. The money used to buy gold is not included in this calculation, as gold has its own Zakat. Similarly, silver has its own Zakat.
If the gold or silver does not reach the Nisab, but you have cash, you can combine the cash with the gold or silver to complete the Nisab. In this case, Zakat is due.
