The Practice of Conveying Greetings to the Prophet: An Examination
Question: Many people ask those going for Hajj or Umrah to convey their greetings to the people of Madinah, meaning the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and other prophets. Is it correct to ask for such greetings to be conveyed?
Answer: This practice is an innovation (bid’ah) because there is no evidence for it in the Quran or Sunnah. Authentic hadiths confirm that whenever and wherever we send blessings and peace upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), it is conveyed to him. Therefore, there is no need to ask someone to convey our greetings to him. This practice is entirely an innovation, and I have addressed this issue in several answers in my book on Hajj and Umrah-related matters.
