Understanding Adhan Practices When Combining Maghrib and Isha Prayers

Question: In the case of continuous heavy rain, if Maghrib and Isha prayers are combined, should the Adhan be given after the time for Isha enters, even though the Isha congregation has already been performed?

Answer: When Maghrib and Isha prayers are combined due to rain and performed at the time of Maghrib (known as Jam’ Taqdim), the Adhan is not given at the time of Isha. The Adhan is intended to call people to prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) practiced this. In a lengthy hadith narrated by Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding Hajj, it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Dhuhr and Asr prayers with one Adhan and two Iqamahs at Arafat, and similarly, performed Maghrib and Isha prayers with one Adhan and two Iqamahs at Muzdalifah. The hadith states: “When he reached Muzdalifah, he performed Maghrib and Isha prayers with one Adhan and two Iqamahs.” (Sahih Muslim: 1218)
