Are Those Who Die from Stomach Illness Considered Martyrs in Islam?

Understanding the Hadith on Martyrdom due to Stomach Illness and its Application

Question: I heard a hadith that whoever dies from a stomach illness is a martyr. Is this hadith authentic, and does it apply to kidney disease?

Answer: This is established by a sahih hadith that a person who dies of a stomach illness is considered a martyr. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “There are five types of martyrs: They are those who die because of plague, Abdominal disease, drowning or a falling building etc., and the martyrs in Allah’s Cause.” (Sahih Bukhari: 2829) Some scholars interpret “stomach illness” as dysentery, while others consider it to refer to any stomach-related illness. Regarding kidney disease, it can be hoped that such a person may also receive the reward of martyrdom.
