What to Do If a Body Is Severely Injured or Shattered: Washing or Tayammum in Islamic Funeral Rites

Islamic Guidelines for Washing Bodies in Severe Injuries or Shattered Conditions

Question: If a person’s body is severely affected in an accident and is bleeding, and he dies in that condition, is it necessary to give him a ghusl (ritual washing) or is it sufficient to perform tayammum (dry ablution)? And what if the body is dismembered, what would be the procedure for ghusl?

Answer: A person who dies as a result of an accident while bleeding should be given a ghusl; tayammum is not sufficient. If blood is flowing, a bandage should be applied to the area where the bleeding is occurring to stop it. Even if the limbs are severed, all parts should be gathered together, and ghusl should be performed for the deceased.
