Prioritizing Fard over Sunnah in Fajr Prayer: A Hadith-Based Analysis

Should You Perform Sunnah or Fard First in Fajr Prayer When Time is Limited?

Question: The Hadith states, “من ادرك من الصبح ركعة قبل ان تطلع الشمش فقد ادرك الصبح” which means, “Whoever catches one Rak’ah of the Fajr prayer before the sun rises has caught the Fajr prayer.” In light of this Hadith, if one wakes up in the morning with only enough time to pray one Rak’ah, should they perform the Sunnah or the Fard prayer first?

Answer: First of all, this Hadith is found in Sahih Bukhari, meaning it is an authentic Hadith. Secondly, when Sheikh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked a similar question, he replied that one should use an alarm to wake up before the Adhan to perform the prayer on time. He further mentioned that in such a situation, one should perform the Sunnah prayer first and then the Fard prayer, as this was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

However, other scholars have stated that if there is only enough time to perform the Fard prayer or if there is just enough time to perform one Rak’ah before the sun rises, then one should perform the Fard prayer to ensure that the Fajr prayer is performed on time. The Sunnah prayer can be performed after the Fard prayer or after the sun has risen. I believe this second opinion is more appropriate in such a situation.
